It’s February; do you know
what your New Year’s resolutions are?
==========================================
New generics for 2006:
This year we will see big drugs go generic: Altace, Ambien, Lamisil, Norvasc,
Pravachol, Zocor, and Zoloft. The first company to obtain approval for a
generic is given six months exclusivity and does not lower the price until
later. Scheduled to go generic are
Fosamax, Sonata, and Wellbutrin XL, which are stuck in legal limbo. Pharmacist’s Letter. ===========================================
If you buy the dog, do you buy the fleas?
Hope for Plantar Fascitis
(PF):
German doctors are treating PF with injections of BOTOX. Relief is immediate and continues
twelve months later. PF causes severe pain in the sole of the foot that feels
like a severe cramp. It may last for years or spontaneously disappear. –Annals of Rheumatic
Disease.

As tax time approaches, be
aware when you put the words “The” and “IRS” together it spells “THEIRS”.
============================================
Istalol (timolol):
ISTA Pharmaceuticals, in threatening
language, is reminding pharmacists no other timolol ophthalmic is bioequivalent
to ISTALOL. BIG
DEAL. How is Istalol therapeutically preferable?
The usefulness of over priced “me too” drugs ceased in the 1980’s. --GARxY.

Dubious Supplements:
Tests by ConsumerLab.com show some products
contents are not as labeled. Bitter orange is used in products labeled
“ephedra-free” but has the same effect as ephedrine. Ripped Fuel Ephedra
Free has as much caffeine as fourteen colas plus ephedrine like stimulants,
Zantrex-3, as much caffeine as thirty colas. Trim Spa had 40% more chromium than on the label, a
dangerous amount.

posthumously: When his revolver failed to fire during a hold-up, would-be
robber James Elliott peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again. This
time it worked . . .

Dry Eyes? Eat Tuna:
Dry eye syndrome, affecting
up to eight million Americans, is improved by consuming omega-3 fatty acids.
Results from women participating in the study at Schepens Eye Research
Institute of Boston were dramatic. A high intake of omega-3 fatty acids reduced
the risk of dry eye syndrome by 20%. Tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines, and
Carlson’s Fish Oil or Cod Liver Oil is good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. (My
puppy takes the fish oil). Gary

who invented Coca-Cola in 1886 is the namesake of Atlanta’s new 20-acre
entertainment complex, Pemberton Place.

American Academy of Ophthamology, 2005:
Dr Douglas Jabs, Johns Hopkins,
emphasized the side effects of corticosteroids, noting NSAIDs may also be used.
Dr. Glen Jaffe, Duke University,
introduced the new intravitreal fluocinolone implant, now FDA improved, which
releases fluocinolone in the vitreous cavity thirty months.

After Exxon paid an average of $80,000 each to rescue
animals from its infamous oil spill, there was a ceremony for two seals to be
released into the wild. Cheers quickly became moans when, in full view, a
killer whale ate both.
If you have
MEDIGAP or a Supplement:
If your coverage, as in a “J” policy is
better than Medicare D coverage, you should continue to use your supplemental
coverage and not choose a Medicare-D plan. You cannot have both. Medicare D is
not expected to pay hospital or doctor co-pay (20%) and deductible. Verify this
with your agent.
We all get heavier as we
get older because there's a lot more information in our heads. So I'm not fat,
I'm just really intelligent and my head couldn't hold any more so it started
filling up the rest of me!
That's my story
And I'm sticking to
it!

Gabapentin (Neurontin) for Hot Flashes:
After breast cancer, the use of estrogens
for hot flashes may not be an option. The use of 900 mg. daily of gabapentin is
shown to reduce the severity of chemotherapy-induced hot flashes. – Lancet 2005; 366

Drugs
that deplete vitamin B12: Amoxicillin,
Tagamet, Cipro, Erythromycin Doxycycline, Prilosec, oral contraceptives,
Dilantin, Zantac, penicillin, sulfa.

Body Image Causes Lack of Desire:
The more a woman perceives herself as less
attractive, the more likely she is to report a decline in sexual interest, a
team at Penn State found. Some of the women could not think of one attractive
feature. They especially disliked their stomachs, hips, thighs, and legs.
Two-thirds of the women, otherwise in good health, and not menopausal, desired
sex less than ten years before. ==Journal of Sex
Research.

===========================================================
Imuran for Multiple Sclerosis (MS):
Imuran (Azathioprine) is an
immunosuppressive agent known to reduce relapse rates in patients with MS. Now
at a university hospital-based outpatient MS center, 14 patients with
relapsing-remitting MS received Azathioprine, up to 3 mg/kg daily, for six
months. A reduction in lesions of 50% or more in twelve of the fourteen was
maintained. –Archives
of Neurology, December. ===========================================================

Topical NSAIDs Reduce Pain of Knee
Osteoarthritis: Transcutaneous CREAM
containing NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) applied four times
daily relieved symptoms of osteoarthritis of knees. Applied four times daily
for three weeks efficacy developed over the course of the first week, reached a
peak during the second week, and was maintained over the third. Systemic
exposure from topical NSAIDs is estimated at less than 10% of that after oral
administration. –Journal
of Rheumatology, December. On prescription, almost
any NSAID or combination (Ketoprofen, Indomethacin, Diclofenac, Motrin, etc.)
can be used in a transcutaneous cream. Without a prescription, Prescription
Center has Iso-K
which is quite effective – helps pulled muscles, tendonitis, tennis
elbow, etc also.
The difficulty lies not so much
in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones. –John
Maynard Keynes.

Low Brain Estrogen Linked to Alzheimer’s:
Post-mortem analyses of
the brains of women with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) show much lower estrogen content
than age matched controls. This may explain the higher prevalence of AD in
women, since animal experiments show brain estrogen deficiency accelerates beta amyloid
plaque formation. Treatment of AD with estrogen will require natural drugs that
cross the blood-brain barrier. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Pain & suffering is
inevitable but misery is optional.
Choose Your Parents Carefully:
Your chance
of becoming diabetic is 14% if a parent is, 50% if both parents are.
A woman’s
risk of breast cancer is doubled if a mother or sister has it, increased
5-fold if mother and a sister have it. What if you are an only child?

Compounder’s Advantage:
Pharmacists can customize
a new treatment immediately; a drug manufacturer needs seven years, or will
discontinue a needed product when it is no longer profitable. Examples of
compounded prescriptions:
1. Topical Diltiazem/Lidocaine to
treat an anal fissure without surgery.
2. Tetracycline/Nystatin Suppositories
for Gardnerella vaginalis (odor).
3. Small, fish flavored, soluble tablets.
4. “Dr. Nelson’s
All Purpose Nipple Cream” containing five drugs for a new mom in a very
uncomfortable, painful condition.
5. A combination
hormone cream ten times the potency that is available commercially.
Examples
are just that and are not to promote any drug. We are available to discuss with
physicians and their patients alternative treatments. Most require a
prescription.

Left-Handedness
and Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer occurs in left-handed premenopausal women 39% more often.
This group should have themselves screened annually by mammography and, every
month, self-examine their breasts and not allow themselves to become
overweight. –British Medical Journal
